The Talking Tree

A non-profit organization in London, England is intent on transforming the advertising industry. Purpose Disruptors wants to promote sustainability, which involves taking care of the Earth so that people, animals and plants can have what they need now and in the future.

The company has worked with the United Kingdom Government and with many agencies to help create award-winning campaigns.

One of those campaigns is called The Talking Tree. It is an Agency for Nature campaign. The Agency for Nature is run by Purpose Disruptors with help from a growing network of partners. The purpose of such campaigns is to change the narrative around nature and promote a lifestyle that embraces the natural world, the Agency for Nature website stated.

The Talking Tree uses AI technology that translates trees’ impulses into human speech. To achieve that, bioelectrical signals from each tree in the project were transformed into speech through an AI large language model. Insights about the trees’ lifespans and histories were captured as well as such things as wind speed, temperature and soil moisture. The AI data allowed conversation between the trees and more than 100 people.

The AI mechanism was installed on the outside of each tree in the project. Then people were filmed interacting with the trees. The AI interaction was set up in London, England; Dublin, Ireland; and Austin, Texas.

Austin, Texas major Steve Adler tried his hand at interacting with one of the trees. He asked the tree how Steve could improve its life. The AI generated reply from the tree was, “Your care warms me. More stable temperatures and consistent moisture would help. Thank you for asking.”

The London-based agency, Droga5, came up with the creative campaign to help Agency for Nature and Purpose Disruptors in their efforts to operate in harmony with the natural world. In the future, it might even be possible for the AI application to help farmers talk with their crops or to predict wildfires by talking to forests.
