Western bluebird perches on fence near eastern redbud bush
In October, I snapped a picture of this western bluebird sitting on my garden fence near an eastern redbud bush in my neighbor’s yard. The leaves have since turned yellow and are starting to fall off.
It made me wonder what other signs of autumn I could find if I walked around my yard and through the neighborhood. Here are a few signs I discovered.
1. A neighbor was using a leaf blower to blow his leaves into a pile so he could scoop them into a garbage sack.
2. The leaves on my cosmos and zinnias dried up, and the flowers shriveled. There were dried up seeds on the zinnias. I saved some of them to plant next spring.
3. My neighbor’s cottonwood tree leaves are blanketing my back yard. I will use the lawnmower one more time this season to pick them up and cut a few clumps of still-growing grass.
4. A tall, straight unusual looking mushroom popped up in one of my flowerbeds after a rain. I had never seen a mushroom there before. The white stem buried in the ground had a thin pink layer wrapped around it.
5. I can’t find ants any more. They have all gone underground.
6. The green bean and sweet pea vines in my garden have all dried up and turned brown.
If you take a walk around your yard and in your neighborhood, I wonder what signs of autumn you will find? Have fun on your outing. Take your cell phone with you to snap pictures!
